A "Sandy" no one was quite sure what a Sandy was. He (it?) was often portrayed as a kind of elfin lookin guy, perhaps influenced by 'browny.' Of course an elf is sure to inspire trepidation in our football foes with such names as Rebels, Longhorns, Cougers and Hornets." Ooooh look out it's one of Sandy Clause's elves." So another image was used, a tornado lookin thing with a bulbous upper body with bulging biceped arms, sorts like Indigo's hurricane I reckon. It went by the name of The Golden Sandstorm, but we were stll the Sandies. The school was; and still is, tho the original building burned down in the '70's; in the middle of the High Plains of Texas, a relativly flat, windy, dry, sandy area, and part of the Dust Bowl of the '30's, not an image favored by the Chamber Of Commerce. So in a town whose name meant yellow in Spanish, perhaps from the sand, surrounded by golden wheat fields, at a HS that had gold as one of its colors, and enough time had passed since the Dust Bowl, the mild mannered Sandy's alter ego, The Golden Sandstorm appeared. The artist had to be careful in drawing that tornado, a nearby small town are the Cyclones, with a similar logo , but for years the score board featured an image that looked more like a gigantic maggott. ( But then who wants to get into a scrimmagre with a bunch a maggotts?) Still and all it was better than bein the Ducks which was the mascot in the early days B4 the Sandy. My favorite team mascots are in Montana and Alaska; the Helena Handbaskets and the Juneau Whats.

At my favorite high school, we were the "Fighting Farmers". Then, my parents moved us out into the "boonies", and my high school mascot there was a "Leopard". It was inlayed into the floor, right at the entrance, by the trophy case ... and if you stepped on it, you were forced to wash and wax it with a toothbrush, (it was about 4 foot by 2 foot)!
