  • Time to run away to the circus...
  • No one can make you become a doctor. Worst case scenario and they're threatening not to pay your tuition, get a job and pay your own way and do what you want to do. It's your life and there's always a choice.
  • Tell them to read about the life and death of Dr Harold Shipman.....
  • I'd say 'fuck you' and move out as soon as possible and pursue my own dreams.
  • I like the run away to a circus answer. Go for it but just for a few weeks. It would be fun and teach the parents that worse things could happen than not being a doctor.
  • First I hope I could understand what a gift they were giving me (if they were footing the bill for everything). However, parents should not, cannot, make such a decision for their child. They can try, but academic and professional success is up to an individual. In the scenario in your question, hopefully the high school graduate could articulate to his parents his own goals and his parents would in turn be supportive. If someone attempts upon such an intellectual journey "just because his parents demand it," he will neither find happiness nor success.
  • I would end up flunking out of medical school. I know very little about science. I also cannot stand to touch blood and any of the bodily fluids that come out of people. +5
  • I would count my blessings instead of sheep. I would exercise, keep my body and mind clean, and hug my parents often!!
  • I'd be a witch doctor :)
  • I would just laugh, a person cannot be forced into the medical (or any other) field. They can't make you learn the material or show up to class. They may threaten to cut you off financially but literally billions of people make it just fine in life without their parents backing them financially and if a person is smart enough to become a doctor they will figure something out.
  • I know you may not like this answer, but you are asking my opinion. I'd take their advice, and their money if that is part of the deal, and I'd go become a doctor.
  • Well they can not force you to become a doctor. If there is no chance of a rational adult discussion and a compromise then I would move out get a job and pay my own way through college and pursue the career I choose.
  • if they actually make you, just never go to class and party all day every day. Then you really wont be able to be a doctor
  • They can't force you to become anything you don't want to. Once you are 18 you have the right to pursue whatever dream you wish to pursue, tell your parents, thanks but no thanks, I am an adult and can and will make my own choices in life.
  • I'd be grateful! Sure, it's hard work for the next 11 years, but look beyond your immediate future... Doctors make oodles of money and live well.
  • if they are willing to pay for it, go for it and do your best. you won't regret it. If it means having to take out loans for hundreds of thousands of dollars in your name then find out what you really want to do.
  • I guess it would depend ... on whether or not I wanted to be a doctor. How can you not have a choice? Perhaps if you elect to accept their continued support and funding, you have to accept their terms as well. But whether to accept or not is your choice.
  • They can't make you become a doctor. You have to do that on your own. Oh, they can emotionally manipulate you, make you feel guilty, but still, if you don't want it, you'll never make it through med school. And if you do it for the wrong reasons, you may become a doctor but you won't become a healer, a physician. You'll just them the prestige and you'll make a few bucks and be totally lost.
  • i'd say, "Hell no, i'm going to Devry's to become a programmer, and there's no way you can stop me!"
  • If they insist on you taking that undergrad course, you may just want to do it if you won't find it difficult. There's no reason you have to continue on to get an MD afterwards.
  • Ok; let's get REAL !! How can parents MAKE / Force you to become a DOCTOR ? They can't !! Once you are 18 ; you can do whatever the hell YOU please ... as you are legally ana adult .. Now if plan on staying at home and sponging / mooching off of your parents ; THEN you probably have to do what they say since you are still in Mommy and daddy's house ... BUT; If you MOVE OUT; get a JOB and a few GRANTS, and live on your own or with a roommate(s) etc ... you can STILL go to school and study whatever YOU want !! Good Luck !! +5
  • If I genuinely didnt want to go down that road I'd simply say, no. At the end of the day there is nothing they can do about it, even if they were retarded enough to threaten you with being cut-off etc. You can still fund yourself if you want to continue in education. Hopefully tho, once they realised you werent just having a tantrum they'd come round & support you.
  • Since I had to find a way to pay for my college and grad school and support myself since I was 18, it would be a privilege. I saw so many kids party and drop out of school where parents paid all of the bills. There are worse things. +5
  • Debliberately flunk your courses
  • Why? Don't you want to become a Doctor? What do you want all this education to come to?
  • SURPRISE!!!!!! As of your 18th Birthday, they can not LEGALLY make you DO ANYTHING! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! You just have to decide one thing now........ Are you willing to let go of what ever perks and bonus goodies they offer you? or Will you sell yourself into slavery? Thank them, and MOVE ON!
  • This is a silly question. If you are serious I would say just go to college and apply yourself with the expectation that you will be doing what you want in life. Study hard, play hard, and make lots of friends. College is a time for learning, maturing, and - most importantly in your case - learning to think for yourself and make your own decisions. . I'm sure your parents also want you to have grand kids for them, make a lot of money, retire comfortably in Florida, and die with dignity at a ripe old age. . Life is what you do today.
  • Well my relatives forced their son to become a doctor, they pushed in school and he became one has two offices and is doing well..A wife and three kids so far, he is thankful now that his parents did that to him. Go to school and become any Doc. you want, Dont think about the 11 years but what you can contribute to humanity..
  • I would thank them
  • How old are you? you need to stand up for yourselves and say NO
  • 1. Once your 18 they have no controll over you. 2. Telling you how to live the rest of your life that you'll never get back, is taking away your rights. 3. Do you want to become a doctor?
  • Make sure you know what you actually do want to do and then you'll find it easier to present your case to your folks. The upshot is that you can't actually be forced to go into medicine. And, if it's not what you want to do and you feel you're there under duress, you probably would struggle in your studies and resent it. If you got through it all you could still make a bad doctor because your heart's not in it! It is really important to make the right decision for you. I could have done medicine, but I didn't want to. I wanted to do pure science which is precisely what I did. I am now a scientist in cancer research and I love it. I don't regret for a minute that I chose not to do medicine. These decisions aren't just about education. They're about your whole life.
  • Go for it! I would. If your parents are offering to pay for it, you should try it. After you get in there, you may decide you really like it, but in case you don't, you can say, "Ok, parents, I tried it like you said, but I don't like it. Sorry." Anyway, you will be old enough to make your own decisions by the time you get to be 18. That is all I can say since I know no details of why your parents think you can be a doctor. They are either both in the medical profession or you are really smart or both.
  • if it was something that i wanted to do, i would be grateful for them paying 100% of it ... if not, i'd grow a backbone, pack my stuff and head out on my own
