  • common sense and social norm
  • Probably the same place religion got them in the first place - common sense.
  • Religion offers some really bad moral codes - once you get down to it.
  • Deep within ourselves... ;)
  • Science is not interested in destroying religion. They are at different ends of the spectrum.Science is the study of the natural world.Society and culture with its changes throughout time dictate moral codes, not religions.
  • Morality is not reliant on religion.
  • Moral codes are passe. Why should anybody else judge what I want to do?
  • Science didn't kill morality. It killed folklore. There is a difference.
  • you should have them by now .
  • Where they have been getting them.. out their asses.
  • The constitution and the law should still prevail. I have no religion but I still respect the rights of others. Besides, I value my freedom and that alone keeps me in line.
  • From the victor i suppose.
  • Religion is probably not the source of most moral codes but it is a powerful carrier and enforcer of them. . I remember being in grade school and listening to teachers talk about being 'good citizens' and I remember being totally unmoved by the concept. Teachers simply have no authority with regard to morality. Rules and procedures in class, sure. Elsewhere? Not so much.
  • First I have to say I don't believe science destroys religion. I do however believe that ignorance provides fertile ground for the myths and superstitions that are the essence of religion. It is disheartening that some, like the poster, seem to think without the threat of hell or the reward of heaven people will just run amok. I'd say that speaks volumes eh? This poster reminds me of the poster not long ago who asked in his or her question about closing church doors. "Don't you think the world might be a more dangerous place as lost and potentially dangerous people have nobody to accept or emotionally support them?" It's a sad state of affairs that have lead us to this sort of seemingly widespread thinking. Without a church and a government to protect us from ourselves all is lost eh? Excuse me while I go throw up. "Organized religion destroys who we are by inhibiting our actions, by inhibiting our decisions, out of, out of fear of some intangible parent figure that shakes a finger at us from thousands of years ago and says, "Do it . . . do it and I'll fu**in' spank you!" -Dogma
  • Science will not destroy spirituality. "Religion" will have to adapt to the findings of science or pass from the world stage, but true spirituality will exist as long as human beings exist.
  • Science will never destroy religion. Science requires study and understanding something a large portion of the world has proven it has little interest in pursuing.
  • From where religion got it. Their own conciousness.
  • Morality does not come from religion. In fact, I think that a heck of a lot of religion is incredibly immoral. Perhaps we would be better off without it.
  • First of all, science does not seek to destroy religion. It only seeks to explain the natural world through observation and experimentation. If religion happens to be disproved in some way (unlikely, considering the world of spirituality is not subject to the rules of science) then that is just a by product, not a goal. Secondly, we will get our moral codes from our conscience.
  • Well religions always have been a strict moral code for many people. Without religion we will have a more and more rude and code-less world. Moral orders have gone and we see in our western societies that we get more and more problems. This is just the point why islamists turn back and point at our code-less societies as a bad example. But if the religious times before were the better solution, I have my doubts. But here in Germany you can see and feel very well the difference of moral standards between the former communist and western part. The communist were completely atheistic and still up today you can see the profound lack of any kind of morality. The traces of materialism you can feel.
  • Morals don't come from religion for the 80th time lol! Don't you think we would have come to the conclusion that murder and stealing is wrong without religion?
  • From inside yourself. That's where mine came from.
  • it can't, it's faith based.
  • OMG, science is without a moral code, so, if it destroys religion, we'd have to get our moral codes from ---- POLITICIANS and LAWYERS!!!
  • Reason.
  • it will become clear at that moment
  • From Basic. BEGIN 10 LIST MORALS 20 OBEY MORALS 30 GOTO 10 END
  • moral codes are embedded in our being. even before we were taught what to believe or how, remember when you were a kid and something hurt, you cried? or, if someone makes a funny face, you laugh? humans just KNOW and always will. it just is.
  • I doubt science will destroy religion. That being said one does not need to ascribe to religion to live morally. One can use practical reasoning and intellect to come by the same actions and thoughts. Then again with the relative and situational aspect of some morals seen from an observant view, a solid answer is hard to come by.
  • myths are there to be destroyed
  • If science "destroys" religion than that means that religion was a false idea in the first place - so to heck with it. If not - then to heck with science then. That said - religion has very little to do with morality - and the same old morals that humanity picks to enforce or ignore depending upon their whims will still be with us. Most people do not practice "religion" in their daily lives - yet they do have a "moral" standard they live by..and those standards by law and custom will be there long after religion has gone the way of the dodo.
  • You should have an internal moral compass if you don't you're screwed.
  • You don't have to be religious to have good morals. Even non-believers have a sense of right and wrong, in my experience.
  • Within your question is the premise that one must have religion in order to have morals and religion and science are mutually exclusive. I do not agree with either. +5
  • Our parents? My parents taught me more than religion ever did in regards to morals.
  • Aha! You discovered the big problem that we are facing! I can already see proof that the moral codes are decaying as religion is being rejected by many. Look at what has happened to the behavior of our children in schools since they took prayer out of the classroom. What made our country great is that it was based on religious belief. We even put "In God we trust" on our currency and out Pledge of Allegience says "one nation, under God . . " Now that people are turning away from God, look at what is happening in our country. You cannot tell me honestly that there is no connection. Don't even try - I won't listen and I won't argue. This is one opinion I remain steadfastly firm on. Excellent question! +5

  • I think it's sad to anybody who relies on religion for a moral code.
  • Who said that science destroys religion? The whole point and draw of religion is that science CAN'T destroy it because religion is not based on observation, evidence and what can be tested. Religion is based on fictional explanations that are not supported by any evidence. Science does not attempt to prove religions wrong because religions will always create a new loophole to escape through.
  • Why, that damned old science anyway! Giving us answers when what we need are riddles. Damn! I guess if science takes over we'll have to kill EVERYBODY. That makes sense.
  • The same place we get them now: from understanding our relationship to the rest of humanity and life. Religion is not the true source of morality -- religions have evolved to encode our pre-existing moral understanding into systematic form, and to enforce variations on those codes. If you take away religion, you do take away some of the "enforcer" and "teacher" elements from society, but you do not remove the basic fact that humans naturally mature into beings who understand morality (as long as no developmental arrest occurs). I think what we need in modern times is a more intelligent dialog about the nature of morality: one which does not fall into nihilism on the one side ("nothing matters") or absolutism on the other ("all morality is handed down by God"). In short, if you take away our babysitters, we have to grow up.
  • It is my opinion that science can never destroy Christianity totally. Jesus told Peter (which means "rock") "on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades (or hell) shall not prevail against it." But is plain to see what is happening to morality as it becomes popular for people to turn from true Christianity.
  • The only morals that can be said to originate in religion is the weird rules, such as: - you should have 4 tassels sewn onto your shirt, - round easter time you must paint your doorframe with lambs blood. - getting a blood transfusion will condemn you to hell - if somebody works on a sunday he must be killed etc. The sensible rules of morality such as: - lying is bad - killing is bad - love your neighbour - stealing is bad cannot be said to 'come from religion' because we find them in pretty much EVERY society, whether religious of irreligious, Christian or pagan, Atheist or Agnostic. regards JakobA
