Makes his confession make more sense in that maybe he wanted to make things right before he died. I am not sure they'll release him he'd have to go into witness protection or something like that.

Why let him go home where he can be comfortable for his last days? Should his crimes just go unpunished because he is terminally ill? We're all going to die eventually...should we all receive a "get out of jail free" card for any crime we commit? Of course not.
