I enjoy romance in books, but I'd like a little story in there somewhere as well, if you know what I mean! ;) So my answer is: Trashy romance novels. You know, the, "and-I-put-my-lips-to-her-neck-leaving-lingering-kisses-as-she-moaned-in-ecstasy" type crap. *shudders*

I don't like most adult fiction. I don't know why publishers think that all adults want to read is increasingly graphic sex and violence. I know crime exists, but I don't want to feed my heart and soul a steady diet of it. When I got too old for kids books, I pretty much stopped reading fiction because I was so disgusted by most of the reading material I was offered. If it was well-written, it was probably disgusting to read and if it was clean, it was usually written so simplistically, whatever the genre, to be interesting or thought-provoking. I would love to see publishers create some other genres of fiction and publish the best authors they can find in those genres. I loved Jim Kjelgard and Walter Morey when I was a kid. Why can't there be adult adventure novels? I've read some good non-fiction adult adventure, like Paddle the Amazon, or Walk Across America, or Blue Highways, that were amazing. But they are few and far between. Can't they find anyone to write things like that? I loved Tolkien, but I haven't found anyone else who writes that well, except maybe J.K. Rowling. Most of the other fantasy I've picked up over the years has been on the level of a Harlequin Romance. Please, please somebody start publishing good fiction for adults. I don't want to read garbage.

I won't buy true crime books. They seems exploitative to me. The one exception I have made are a couple books by prosecutors. I read the Manson book and perhaps one or two others. Many years ago I read In Cold Blood but that was prior to my decision not to buy that genre.

Definitely Romance, I don't want to read about anybody's throbbing members or heaving bosoms. Im saddened by how many folks said scifi though, some really great scifi books out there. but, to each his/her own I suppose.
