Someone told me once that the rich become eccentric and the homeless become crazy. I personally think that eccentric is very quirky, but still together. An insane person doesn't recognize right from wrong, or reality from non-reality. For example, someone who is eccentric may want to paint their entire house (inside and out) all bright yellow and match all of their furniture and belongings to this colour. An insane person might start hearing voices in their head and then murder someone.

Eccentrics operate in their own little unverse of neurosis or quirks. They are harmless and it does not effect anyone in a harmful way. Insanity includes inability to tell reality from delusion and can be extremely harmful to the individual and others. They have no guidance to discern right from wrong.

People are not "possessed" by insanity. There's no correlation between eccentricity and insanity. Eccentric means odd. Insane means not of sound mind.
