Gone With The Wind.. Its like 1939 or something, but age aside it definitely deserves its classic status. A bit girly, perhaps.

Well, now that I'm officially "really old" since I remember clearly some of the other film answers when they were initially released! :) Ha! My suggestion : 1937 The Awful Truth [ very good comedy ] +5

Nosferatu with Max Schreck.

'To Kill A Mockingbird' with Gregory Peck. 'Inherit The Wind' with Spencer Tracy.

I don't consider anything "really old" that was released during my lifetime. So using that criteria... "Metropolis" (1927) - If you can, pick up the newly remastered extended version released on DVD by Kino. Since the film is in public domain, there are many really bad versions out there. Hope this helps.

"The Grapes of Wrath"

Where did my answer go. Damn. Sorry if this is a duplicate but I love this question. I have two favorite old movies. One with a great message even today but was not very popular because of the acting I think. It stared a very young Rock Hudson and Jane Wayman titled Magnificent Obsession. The other was equally terrific. Witness for the Prosecution staring Marlene Deitrich, Charles Lauton and Tyrone Power as the murderer. Unbelievable story and acting.
