  • Lupus is not generally terminal. It can be, but most cases are mild to moderate. Lupus is not considered a terminal disease. It is a chronic disease that can lead to an early death if not properly maintained. Lupus actually doesn't kill anyone but it is the complications from Lupus that kill people. Kidney, heart, lung and brain issues are all reasons that people with Lupus die. As far as the custody issue goes, it really depends on the state. In California a spouse with a terminal illness isn't treated any differently than any other person and therefore would not lose custody as a result of a terminal illness. There would have to be extenuating circumstances such as the inability to care for the children and not having any other alternatives for care. However, just because a person is in end stage renal failure they would not lose custody especially if they had family or friend support to aid in the care of the children.

  • No. "Lupus is not a universally fatal disease. In fact, today, with close follow-up and treatment, 80-90% of the people with lupus can expect to live a normal life span. Lupus varies in intensity and degree. Some people have a mild case, others moderate and some severe, which tends to be more difficult to treat and control." www.chronicbodypain.net/lupus-prognosis-is-it-fatal/
