  • Counting stuff?
  • Math is good for absolutely everything. It is a fundamental principle of reality and can never be incorrect, unless applied incorrectly. I'm amazed there is such common dislike for math, considering every single part of modern society is built on foundations of mathematics. Clothes, food, computers, buildings, roads, cars, money, are all dependent on mathematics. Society's ability to continue to advance science and technology depends on the ability of it's people to know and understand math.
  • Various things, depends on which component of maths you are talking about, Calculus is a complete waste of time (in my opinion). Probability can be useful when betting or gambling, (although most of these calculations are so simple anyway). An Information Technology teacher at our school said he used Trigenometry when tiling his bathroom, (working out how many tiles he needed for a non-square room). And I'm sure there are a few other uses. But I will concede that the uses for maths that you will learn past year 4 is not very common.
  • So you can count up your points on answerbag silly :D!!
  • You know how to set up the microphones for a band without getting feedback? Do some math. Need those football pads to protect you as you're going for a TD, math. Want to know if you can afford your appartment, all your bills, and an ounce of weed? Math.
  • People use math all the time. Here are some of the career fields that require good math skills: Buidling buildings, houses, structures Designing, making, programming computers (including GPS devices, MP3 players, DVD/Blu-Ray players, TiVo systems, TVs, phone systems, etc.) - in fact, any modern day electronics uses computers of some kind Navigating ships & planes Clothing manufacturers (not designers) Banks Stock brokers Astronauts and space agency personnel Truckers (i.e. carrying cargo & determining weight load distribution across the load bearing frame) Astronomers Just to name a few. Now it could be that the math isn't being explained well enough for you to understand, which happens more often that people think.
  • It adds to your life experience. Your life minus math would be much more difficult. I'm sure that you can divide people into two schools of thought on this, but if you put some effort into math now, your rewards will multiply in the future.
  • Maths is the language of logic. You need it whenever you calculate something. Although some things you can work out by intuiation, many practical things require maths. Even when it comes to looking after your money you need it. If you study science you will need to use maths a lot.
  • No pain no gain. All good things comes with hardship. The engineering and technical marvels that make your life easy day by day aren't possible to device without the help of maths. You use a cell phone,a television, the internet, answerbag but, never bother about the complex mathematical mechanism behind it.Those who do,they need maths.
  • Maths is all around us. The fact we are communicating via computer technology is the first obvious example. Without maths, the development of computing would be well... nigh on impossible. Some others have listed some good examples but really, nearly everywhere you look you will find maths. Maths can be hard but so is any subject once you get to grips with it. I think the way maths is taught is a lot of the problem. If people were taught English the way they are taught maths we would have legions of kids leaving school just about knowing the alphabet, with a poor grasp of grammar, barely able to string a sentence together and thinking that poetry was a myth.

  • Certainly math CAN be hard. As for what we need math for, here are some common, everyday uses of math: - Making proper change...or making sure you GOT proper change. - Figuring the milage on your car. - Figuring up your grocery bill as you go...and the sales tax with it. - Figuring up the tip for your meal. - If you're in construction (carpenter, cabinet maker, interior decorator, painter, etc.) basic math skills enable you to calculate yards of concrete needed, board feet of lumber needed, angles to cut at, number of squares of shingles needed, amount of paint needed, size and length of wiring needed, and more - Basic math skills will serve you well in taking money from stupid officers who think you absolutely MUST use calculus to calculate some things with (Yep, I've made a few bucks doing that!) - Math skills are an absolute necessity in understanding the basics of electricity, physics, astronomy, and more. - Doctors and nurses use math skills for various functions, such as determining proper dosages of medications to give. - Anesthesiologists must have a firm grasp of math to properly perform their jobs. - Surveyors use math. - Sailors have been using basic math to navigate the globe for many centuries. If you find math difficult, then this is what I recommend you do: try to find a PRACTICAL application of the math skills you are learning. When you do that, you will have a much better time learning it, because it becomes more interesting and "real" to you then. For example: Trigonometry or ratios: Go outside and figure out how tall a flag pole, tree, or antenna is by using trigonometry and ratio methods. Compare your results to see how close they are. 1. Have someone hold a yard stick vertically and measure the length of it's shadow. Then measure the length of the shadow of a flag pole. Use ratioing to calculate how tall the flag pole is. 2. When you measure the length of the shadow of the flag pole, measure the angle from the tip of the shadow up to the tip of the flag pole. Then calculate how tall that pole is using trigonometry. Compare the two results.
  • +5. I like Math. Not because I can do it, because I can't but it teaches us a valuable lesson. You see, women are superior to men in almost everything. And yes, I know there are some fantastic women math professionals out there. But math was given by God so men could feel they do at least one thing better than women. It makes me feel good for them because they have so little to brag about.
  • Good question..with lots of good answers..basically..maths is part of our everyday living and thats why we need to understand it and no more about it..also, when learnt it can be very enjoyable :D
  • We need math to discover newer and more complicated math.
  • Good question, I ask the same the same question. :)
  • Good point. Another thing, why do we need English? Or History? Or chemistry, physics, and biology? Screw it! You don't need any of that stuff to flip burgers, clean sewers, or read electric meters. Don't let them push you around! Drop out of school and play games and watch TV until your parents kick you out. That'll show them what you think of school! :)
  • Mathematics - the unshaken Foundation of Sciences, and the plentiful Fountain of Advantage to human affairs. ~Isaac Barrow
  • Math doesn't need to be "hard". It is probably poorly taught. Many people find it interesting and delightful and fun to play with.
  • it might of helped me pass that test today, i guess...
