Well, I am not so sure that it didn't. I consider some mechanicals robots such as roomba (the self vac machine) as well as microwaves with auto control, dish washers, and even slow cookers. What constitutes robot? Does it have to be ambulatory? Does it have to vocalize? Does it have to clean up after itself (in case of laundry, fold and put away)? The idea of self propelled robots getting in my business is creepy. I mean all I can think of is bad sci-fi with Robots-Gone-Wild.

Not yet. Robotics and artificial intelligence will have to be WAY better than they are now -- give it another 50 years. Then robots assisting people will be as indispensable as things today like cars, phones, lamps, ...
