G'day Julie W, Thank you for your question. The K stands for the S. S. Kresge chain who started Kmarts back in the sixties. In 1977, the company changed its name to Kmart and sold the Kresge stores in the US in 1987. Kresge stores continued in Canada until 1994. I have attached sources for your reference.
