  • "The Magnificat" is the name of the Blessed Virgin's hymn of praise to God. (Luke 1:46-55). It is named thus for the first words of the canticle in Latin: Magnificat anima mea Dominum, et exultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo. My soul magnifies the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
  • It's not called this in Luke, but among Catholics, Lutherans, and many other Christians, it has become known as the Magnificat.
