  • One could fight it in civil court but the store would probably be in the district attorneys office filing theft charges within an hour of being served with the civil action against them. Pay it. Stay away from the store. NEVER shoplift again! Be sure that you have a written agreement signed by the store that if you pay the $500.00 that no charges will ever be filed aginst you in this matter. You might want to consult lawyer.
  • The store is being generous in not treating this as a criminal charge, but giving you the chance to make things right. Beyond the blouse itself, I'm sure they've spent an extraordinary amount of staff time on the issue. It's not a question of whether to fight it out in civil court or just pay it. It's a question of paying it in civil court, or not paying it in civil court, at which point the store drops their civil action and the Crown attorney takes over and pursues it as a criminal matter. And the store doesn't have to pay for that.
