No what are they????

I remember some old style desks we had in country school during my very early years. They had a place into which to set the ink well. There were also some stored in a cabinet, But, no, we did not use them in the middle 1940's.

I remember all my classroom desks had inkwells. But by the time i was attending school, they were no longer in use. Inkwell was needed before ballpoint pen was invented. With the ballpoints, you no longer need the ink.

Yes, and those messy fountain pens with a pump lever. Every desk had big ink stains from the accidents that happened regardless of care or ink blotters.
-
I guess I can see that. We used fountain pens that held ink. I saw some kids put a bottle of regular ink in the holder, but they usually didn't fit. One kid had a new ball point pen that was costly and it didn't work very well.

No! Never. Do you?
-
Yes! They were filled with "blue-black" ink - that was a nice colour of ink to work with. But that was only when I was in primary school. Little porcelain ink wells which fitted into a little circular hole in the top of the desk. By the time I needed to use an ink pen, however, we had fountain pens, and then cartridges came in - but I still preferred the fountain pen type. You never see them at all these days :( Bring back the ink well!!!
