no it's all random, and very subject to the interpretation of the reader. The famous Australian author, Alan Marshall, did a stint as a fortune teller at a circus for a while, and became very adept at reading the cues the client was giving him, and even evesdropping on conversations before the clientele entered.

Tarot is a form of divination and not really "magic" at all. I've had very accurate readings and have never given the reader any cues or clues for that matter. It is stangely random that there are 78 cards in a deck and only (depending on the type of spread being used) a very small amount of the cards are selected to be read. The selection comes from the query (the person receiving the reading) by the shuffling and the cutting of the deck while they are focusing on the information they want or need to receive. The reader then interprets the cards by the type of card that was selected and by the position the card is in. Each card has a certain meaning and each position had a certain meaning. All in all, there are people that "believe" and there are people "don't believe" in the tarot. However, I have read for "believers" and "non-believers" and have shocked them with the accuracy of information that came from a reading of the tarot cards.

I think it depends on how hard you want to believe its real, if you try really hard you can always find away to relate to what the cards say.

There is no magic behind tarot cards in the traditional sense. If a picture of a magician or a Harry Potter movie comes to mind when the term "magic" is spoken, this picture is dramatically misconstrued. The type of magick associated with tarot cards is often misunderstood or mocked, but simply put "magick" is the direction and application of energy towards a specific goal. During a tarot card reading, the energy and intent from the querent is combined with universal energy to create an accurate reading. The "magic" is only in the magician card... And even that is just a card until some preconcieved notion is imposed upon it by the reader. The tarot deck is a pictorial depiction of the life of the fool (the first card of the major arcana) As he travels through his life and things progress, the rest of the minor arcana are the things that he finds and the people he comes into contact with. The Tarot is based on the belief that God knew all of before we were created. It tells a story of one life and when the deck is shuffled, it shows a possible path yours might take when the circumstances or the details are shuffled. It was meant to be a divining parlor/card game created for the entertainment and amusement of the Visconti family in midieval Italy.

The magic isn't in the cards. The cards are a tool for the reader to use to focus his/her own abilities. My great-grandmother read tea leaves and interpreted dreams. My grandmother read bicycle playing cards. It's just a tool for divination.
