They're a bonded pair! They do that to keep the bonds strong and also to scent mark each other.

could be both... this is actually an intersting question for me... are the helpers hungry or helping *.* Me tinks both

It's a mutual grooming thing between kitty friends who wish to leave their scent on each other for purpose of identification and claiming them as their friend. Many other species of animal also do the same :)

It is the form of affection that cats use. It is grooming- it means that there is a relationship between the two cats. Generally the dominant one will lick the other, and it will be returned as a gesture of goodwill.
-
It is affection.... they are grooming each other...
-
It's a bonding between cats as the 2 cats are showing affection to each other.
-
It could be either. It can be a sign of dominance, as well as affection.
-
Both my cats are male and they lick each other a lot. Besides grooming, could they be Gay cats.
-
It coud just be that one of them stinks. My male kitty is rubbish at cleaning & rarely bothers so my female kitty is always cleaning him.
-
Hard to be sure, unless you see the way they interact the rest of the time. I had 2 neutered males, and the young strong one would lick the old guy. That was definitely a dominance thing (both male, rivals for position of top cat). The rest of the time they playfight or ignore each other. So it was unlikely to be friendliness or grooming. My female cat licks my hand when I stroke her, and won't stop, so I eventually have to stop petting her - but I'm told that is out of affection. She didn't do that as a kitten, but is elderly now, less mobile and purrs happily at any attention.

He's trying to get the taste of his butt off his tongue.
-
It's usually a sign of affection between cats who've bonded with each other.
-
