Ragtime (1897 - 1918) is long before swing...(1930 - 1940s) tempos are slower, more laid back rhythms are played straight not swung Ragtime is not a jazz style as much as a style that grew into jazz.

Ragtime is felt in cut-time, with a march, straight-eighth feel. Swing is generally in 4/4 time (most noticeable in the drummer's bass drum), with the addition of swung-notes and syncopated rhythms. Ragtime is known for collective improvisation (everyone soloing together, due to the lack of written form), while swing was more organized (with soloists/backgrounds) as true jazz composers (Jelly Roll Morton, Louie Armstrong, etc...) started writing down their charts.
