  • I do not agree. It is not for the state to vet the practice of a religion which clearly includes education. Separation of church and state cuts both ways.
  • only if parents are held to the same standard.
  • I can stand behind that!! Sounds good!
  • No. Anyone who deals with children should have police background checks and probably psychological tests, although that will never happen as it isn't cost effective to test ever boy or girl scout leader in the country. I don't see any need for an "education" standard. There are plenty of kind, loving and caring individuals who deal with children of all ages and don't have much education. A good heart and intentions is much more important. Perhaps, however, parents should be held to these requirements too. There are tons of parents out there who are unfit, and children deal with them far more than do community, church and educational volunteers. The damage a poor parent can do is far more extensive than that of someone who is outside the family. Perhaps, women and their partners should be subjected to background, police and psychological tests before their children are released to them. That would save far more of the young and vulnerable.
  • No. What makes you think the police are good judges of character? In fact, if I had children, I'd be suspicious of anyone who HAD NOT been to jail for justice. I've got a police record as long as your arm, and I doubt you'll find anyone more ethical, compassionate, and reliable than me. Jesus was arrested and executed by the State. Do you think he could pass a police check?
  • As a parent we must be active in the lives of our children, they are our greatest acheivement. I can't imagine any place we can't go with our children in the US. Trust your instincts...
  • No, I do not agree. Those who are a threat to our children wear many coats and usually lead normal lives on the outside. Tests such as lie detector tests are not always accurate, if even half the time. They are man-made and can be beaten by manipulative individuals. You cannot judge one area of fields of employment. We have had a couple cases within the past year of LE officers who were caught molesting young children here in Florida. I am embarrassed to turn on the news because it seems most of the pedophiles live here in Florida. I believe they need to bring swift punishment to these offenders. We put sick dogs down yet let sick minded individuals who have robbed families and society of our young ones sit and live in our prisons. I believe tougher laws should be put into effect and we mercy kill these sick, inhumane humans who do such things as rape or kill a child.
  • would not make any difference... a person can "snap" at any time.
  • Definitely!! As well, teachers, principals, police, writers of children's books and tv actors performing on children's shows should also be vetted thoroughly. Don't forget to test potential parents and making sure that they pass before permitting them to have children. Also, they have families who will be interacting with the children. So make sure to test aunts, uncles, grandparents and siblings of the potential child to make sure that the child will be safe. If they can find a gene to test for the potential to abuse, they should perhaps use that as a basis to abort the fetus before it can be born and infect society. Nothing is too good for our children...except perhaps common sense.
  • In Australia any person that has a job that will allow them to come into contact with a minor MUST have what is called a blue card, it is a card issued by the government to say they have had to appropriate police check and background check done, that said they could still be a pedophile that just hasn't acted upon their urges and now have been given a green light to be near kids without suspicion.
  • No. If I were to possibly condone that kind of behavior, I'd rather do it for people considering getting married or people considering getting pregnant...or who got pregnant without such actions prior to. But better yet, if you're all about that kind of action, then why not just make The Chief "Judge for the Stupid". I'll personally take care of ALL court cases, and my sentences will be final.
  • In most places they do, especially if they work with children! I had to. But I do agree, completely!
  • Simple answer to the question. NO, that would be singling out one class for persecution. You have many others, including volunteers, also allowed to deal with the young and vulnerable for which there are no standards or checks.
  • I think individual sects should regulate themselves. In the case of positions within the local congregation (such as Sunday School teacher), then the leadership of the congregation should also determine if the calling is appropriate. The State should rarely interfere with the Church. Those on the sex offenders registry should be required by law to inform the leadership of the congregation where they worship (if they do attend worship services).
  • Why limit it to religion? Also teachers, accountants, doctors, lawyers, health care workers. All who interact in any kind of "teacher/learner" role should face the same kind of tests in my opinion. Scout leaders, YMCA/YWCA counselors...day care workers. Music/dance/art instructors..all of them. Religion is no more special in that regard than anything else. The young and vulnerable are sponges and soak up what their "elders" give them. Babysitters...repair people who enter homes to do repair work... :)
