G'day Perryman, Thank you for your question. In 1989, the first Grammy for best rap performance was won by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince for Parents Just Don't Understand. Two years later, it was replaced by best solo performance and best performance by a duo or group. In 2003 and 2004, there were awards for best solo performance by a male and female but it has reverted back to best solo performance. Awards for best rap album and song have been added. The first Grammy for rap or hip hop was definitely won by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince in 1989. I have attached sources for your reference.
