  • We can't be sure exactly what happens, but the information goes into the Short Term Memory (STM) and if it is in there long enough or is significant enough, it then passes into the Long Term Memory (LTM). However, all information in the STM is subject to decay or substitution, so may not make it into the LTM. The best way to ensure something makes it into the LTM is to rehearse the information, i.e. go over it again and again, therefore increasing the time the information has spent in the STM and for this reason, increasing the chance the information has of making it into the LTM.
