in short... Fired - usually means you were not doing something right in the job. Layed off - usually means there is not enough work. OF COURSE - there are exceptions...

Being laid off means either that the companies orders have temporarily dried up,or an outside supplier has failed to keep a steady supply of components for full production.The production lines have stopped,and the management has no alternative but to lay the workforce off.The company then lays off its workers until such a time they can resume full profitable production again.

Layoff is generally in reference to being let go from a job due to lack of work or similar factor that is not any fault of yours. Fired is usually in reference to being let go due to poor job performance or similar factors that are under your control.

Fired is not doing something right and looks bad, layoff is the company doesn't have enough money to pay you or stuff for you to do that makes them enough money to pay you, potential employers aren't worried by this as it's beyond your control (this has been my experience anyway)

Fired means you won't be coming back. your done. Layoff means that when things get better they will call you back most times. Unless they wanted to clean house. Then they won't call you back.

Layed off, your Pink slipped, the Firm could take you back, you can collect unemployment benefits. Fired, your Sh## canned, no benefits for you! (Not always true you can fight to get your bennies but it takes a hearing)
