Jennifer Renee is TROUBLE is right. But I'd add checkers, Chinese checkers, and chess. Scrabble once the kids get a little older is a must.
-
Monopoly, Scrabble, Sorry, and Yahtzee (not a board game, but a good game none the less).

I like Trivia Pursuit. I even use the question cards to learn solo and to teach without actually playing the game...something like "flash cards". I always thought that teachers might use them in group competitions to teach facts in class. It would be fun to a bunch of bored kids...the kids might even learn something...for a change. Now, who was the first to climb to the top of Mount Everest? :-) Great question...+5

Scrabble...maybe it will help people with their spelling as it seems the school systems do not.

Cranium. We have played that every year after our thanksgiving dinner for the past 4 years. :) Also Uno. Even though that's not a "board" game but anyone and everyone can play and it's super easy to teach.

One of those good multi-game sets that has chess/checkers/backgammon and a few other things. An excellent source for pieces for other games if nothing else, and it's good to know the classics. Scrabble of course. A few other word games worth mentioning: Boggle, Upwords, Scribbage/Ad-Lib really any word games are good A few good card games is always a plus, in addition to regular playing cards Rook, Uno and Dutch Blitz are all good choices. Settlers of Catan is a nice introduction not only to dice probability but also to the more abstract Euro style games that are becoming more popular every year. Monopoly, Life and Risk are classics that most people will tell you you need. Sadly, not one of these is a particularly good game, still, playing them (and usually outgrowing them) seems to be a classic part of childhood. This is of course only the bare beginnings of a decent game closet. A nice selection of card games (bonus, most of them are relatively cheap and are often more kid friendly than actual board games) a few Euro games, a party game or two (Balderdash, Apples to Apples, Pictionary) and maybe a few trivia games and you're well on your way.
