  • Not sure.. I had always heard it was the counting (1 one thousand, 2 one thousand) inbetween claps of thunder..to tell how many miles away it was.. not lightning.. this is new to me.
  • I always heard - 3 second = 1 kilometer away between lightning and thunder.
  • isn't it counting elephants between the lightning and the thunder. For every elephant it is a mile
  • You can determine the distance lightning is from you to some degree of accuracy by counting the time between lightning seen and thunder heard. It takes about five seconds for sound to travel a mile. Thus, counting the seconds from the time you see the lightning until hear the thunder and dividing by five will give you the distance of the bolt in miles, divide by 3 for distance in kilometres. so, 5 seconds = 1 mile 3 seconds = 1 kilometer
  • count how long between a lightning strike & the thunder each second equalls 1 km. try it...
