Yes, in some ANIMAL species, a new mother will consume the placenta for its nutrition, as well as to get rid of the smell of blood which attracts predators to infant animals.
-
In some parts of the world, it is customary, yes.
-
Some animals do, but not humans.
-
I saw a tv show that showed the parents taking a bite of the placenta. I wouldn't say customary, but some do.
-
Perhaps................ IF YOURE A DOG! But most humans dont.

I know that in China aborted fetuses are considered a delicacy by some. So if any country does it, I'd vote for them. Ewww!

In the US it is NOT customary for people to do that. In fact it is repugnant.

Not here. My wife did not see the humor when I pointed out that the placenta reminded me of a personal pan pizza. Probably should have waited until we were home from the hospital to mention that...

Supposedly, it has hormones and vitamins that signal the brain to get back to normal and prevents postpartum depression. Don't look at me, I'm not the freak who studied this, I've just heard about it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placentophagy Wiki can be unreliable, but I've found it to spark some interest. But this? Grody.

NOT in MY family! Yet, there are some places in the world where it is customary. "Preparing the placenta for consumption by mothers is considered traditional among Vietnamese and Chinese people. The Chinese believe a nursing mother should boil the placenta, make a broth, then drink it to improve her milk. That practice, known as "placentophagy," did not go over well when depicted last year on the British cooking show "TV Dinner," according to The Independent, a London newspaper. The show featured a London couple celebrating the birth of their granddaughter by preparing, then eating, the baby's placenta as a means of reflecting rituals around the world and symbolically sharing in the baby's gene pool. The placenta was fried with shallots and garlic, flambeed and pureed and served to 20 family and friends as a pate on focaccia bread. The father had 17 helpings, but other guests were less enthusiastic, the paper reported. After receiving complaints from viewers, the Broadcasting Standards Commission ruled the program had breached a taboo that "would have been disagreeable to many," even though the producers attempted to treat the subject sensitively and fairly." http://www.tidesoflife.com/placenta.htm
