  • The biggest and most costly mistake just about everyone makes: Not asking THE NUMBER 1 Question! This is it: "Would you please tell me everything you can about ____________?" (Whatever it is you have an interest in doing at that particular time. AND you MUST allow those with the knowledge and answers the time to thoroughly answer that question.) THEN you keep your mouth shut until your question is thoroughly answered to your satisfaction. AND asking any follow-up questions, which weren't answered. If you feel comfortable and confident about asking another person or others for their opinions please do it. After getting ALL your questions answered to your satisfaction, you evaluate and make your decision. How? Benjamin Franklin developed a very simple, yet very effective system. Sit down in a very quiet place. NO TV, ipod, radio or any other interruptions or distractions. At the top on a blank sheet of paper, write the situation/challenge/problem you are faced with: Should I/we do . . .? After the question draw a vertical line down the middle and a horizontal line across the top of that vertical line - much like a very large upper case "T". On the left side of that middle vertical line, write "For" or "+". On the right side of that middle vertical line, write "Against" or "-". Under that +, you number and write down ALL those things or points which could help you to go FOR that question. Under that -, you number and write down ALL those things or points which could help you NOT to go or Against that question. You can use multiple sheets of paper. You can take as long OR as little time as you like. This is your decision and your life you are deciding about. Do the same for any and all other decisions you’re interested in and conc3rened about. You can switch back from sheet to sheet and from + to - and then from - to +. . Look at the numbers between the all your sheets: When the + outnumber/outweigh the -, do it. When the - outnumber/outweigh the +, don't do it. Doing it this way puts everything into a plain, black and white perspective. Thanks for asking your Q! I did my best to answer it. I hope the information helps. VTY, Ron Berue Yes, that is my real last name! Sources: Some personal observations and opinions. • If you've seen the movie Elizabethtown, there's a scene where Drew Baylor (Orlando Bloom) is being told by Phil DeVoss (Alec Ba1dwin) that his (Drew Baylor's) shoe design flop was going to cost the company $927 million. But an area where you see costly mistakes quite frequently is in sports where teams draft the wrong guy early, often while passing on another person playing the same position who ends up becoming a Hall of Fame player. Or when players opt to return for another year of college when their stock is high, only to have a bad season or get injured and see their stock plummet, losing out financially (although, at times, the education or additional years in college may be worth it for the player). Or when a player in his prime retires, giving up millions, to pursue a career in something else (e.g., baseball). One example of a costly mistake from my own life was working on a paper for almost an entire day without saving only to have the power go out as I was trying to think of how I would wrap things up in my closing paragraph. This was just prior to word processing programs adding the auto-save feature. So, I had to spend another day rewrite my paper.
