Hard question. I go for Peter Sellers in Dr Strangelove. So versatile, so sharp, so funny. Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator comes second. Of living comedians, Ricky Gervais for his work in The Office but especially in Extras. I used to like Steve Martin but I believe he has lost some of his sharpness recently. I loved the stuff he did in the 1980s though.

Pretty much all of them are hit and miss. Sometimes they are funny, sometimes they aren't. The most consistently funny I've seen is George Carlin. In second I would say Chris Rock.
