  • Often they peck not for food, but also for territorial callings. The local post office had a woodpecker who rattled a power transformer box. It was quite noisy doing that. I'd suggest waiting in the yard with a large drum. Next time he starts up, tap the drum rapidly in response every time he does. Essentially you'll be indicating to him that he's invading another woodpecker's territory.
