A female, virgin friend of mine is finding that she cannot insert her fingers into herself more than an inch, and so gets no pleasure out of doing it. Is there some reason for this, like her hymen being in the way, or is she simply doing something wrong?

I would be gently encouraging to her. Tell her she'll figure it out, and to keep trying it whenever she wants, but not to worry about it. Tell her that self-discovery is often a process, and that she's very normal. She probably has an intact hymen, and it will eventually cause some pain to 'break' it. Every woman goes through that to some extent at some point. She should be encouraged that, in time, her sexual experiences with herself and others will bring her great pleasure.
