Anytime there is: -- a fire alarm in a closed area holding people inside .. only x number of exits .. -- rioting or looting .. as a consequence of something larger .. maybe a protest against a real or perceived social injustice .. or natural disaster .. and sheer numbers of people push things over the line. Gets out of control. "Mob mentality" takes over or "me first" survival buttons or just pure panic. Not the best sides of human nature. Would rather think of FUNNY pandemonium examples rather than the above, but I've witnessed enough of the above to know they teach some mighty big lessons if we pay attention. In a way, they're like a social volcano that erupts when the pressures build past an acceptable or bearable level.

Pandemonium?! How about this? New Orleans, 1978: One of the few times I was REALLY afraid of something. A day or two before Mardi Gras; I was at the corner of Canal Street and one of the other streets in the French Quarter. 2 stories above the street: A girl was throwing beads and "flashing" her boobs to the crowd below. From the same balcony, a guy dressed in cowboy regalia (wearing only chaps) was "flashing" his buns. He leaned over the wrought iron rail too far and fell into the crowd. The crowd panicked. I was carried for 2 city blocks. My feet never touched the ground! THAT was truly frightening AND qualifies as pandmonium! Don't you agree? Thanks for asking your Q! I did my best to answer it! VTY, Ron Berue Yes, that is my real last name! Sources: A not-too-pleasant stroll down "Memory Lane". "THE University of Hard Knocks" Also known as ("a/k/a") "life's valuable lessons".
