What it has meant for the last few centuries - a legal status, given by the government, which may or may not be accompanied by a religious ceremony.
-
Something that should last for life.
-
A legal commitment between two adults. Something which will hopefully in the very near future be available for all citizens. I'm hoping to get married before I turn 50! (and I will very soon turn 46)
-
a beautiful relationship a great bonding

I have to agree with Wide Awake Phoenix - it is merely a sheet of paper & a religious ceremony. however, having said that, i've been married for 5 years and we've had 2 arguments. Ours is a love meant to last until it ends, and then, someone has to die. luckily - he goes to sleep first ;)

Another reason for vapid idiots to spend lots of money on a party that only other vapid idiots really care about. It's an antiquated ritual that serves nothing except to protect ones property and money when the inevitable divorce comes. On the other hand, it's nice to know you are loved and cared for enough that someone wants to officialize the relationship. But my final answer is this .... marriage is a reletionship killer. Most marriages dissove after two or three years. Cynical...possibly; bitter...maybe; correct .... absolutely.

Two different things. One is a legal status, and the other is a permanent status in the heart.
-
Compromise and a great friendship.
-
A choice made by other people.

Marriage means the same thing to me as it always has. It is a legal, sometimes religious, status usually accompanied by a ceremony that connects people. I always have thought that it should be at-will (otherwise you have a recipe for abuse), the willing consent of all parties is required, and that the parties must be adults. Too often in too many cultures (especially in history) marriage has meant legal sexual slavery, and that is unfortunate.
-
nothing much as i dont need some religious bloke who usually abuses his power over others telling me who i can and cant love
-
To me? It means for better or for worse, in sickness and in health I will stand by your side through thick and thin till death do us part.

Not much

To me it means having more than a best friend who is closer than most family. It's someone to take care of me, love and forgive me no matter what
-
Staying together for the sake of the dog
-
An obsolete institution, that isn't needed anymore.

-
It has always meant the same to me- its a bond of hearts.

If I would base it on my relationship now, I would say it would be "a pain in the ass". If I got married I would actually have to be a stepmother to two kids that are spoiled rotten and have little respect for their father. They both treat him like an ATM. I would have to "love" them as my own(even though I don't have children) I was told by a woman, "If I was with someone that didn't love my kids then I wouldn't be with him". Hmm-I don't see the point in marriage these days. I would rather live happily with someone and know that I have nothing to prove. I was married once-I hated it. I "loved" being divorced more than I "liked" being married.
-
that divorce (just might) be around the corner! but only if the wrong type of people get married to each other.
