Although many do this we must know it is to benefit the parents really as the infant most likely does not have a clue about the theme. I would say for the benefit of the baby it should be soft colors with not too much distractions. We see how babies react to movement which will keep them from getting the rest they need in those tender years. I would not jump into too much of a theme until the child develops a taste for certain things.

NFL. You can't go wrong with an NFL themed infants room.

I like soft pastels and I think baby farm animals would be cute.

Soft, peaceful colors, and Teddy Bears can work for either gender.

Highly contrasting figures or designs (such as polka dots, cartoon characters etc.) can induce nightmares so stay away from them yo...

Items of interest. Items that hold a infant's attention and demonstrate the principles of physics. Mobiles, etc. Beyond that, boy or girl?
-
I like blues and yellows and mobils are really nice. Since they lay on their backs, things that hang down and move keep them interested. Also a nice rocker for mom and a nice soft blanket. A soft light too. Congratulations!!

Abstain from Michael Jackson/Wonderland, PeeWee Herman, etc themes, and you're close enough

soft color with beautiful and playable toys

Start with the interior paint. Soft, natural colors everywhere. Include natural light or full-spectrum light rather than fluorescent bulbs. Furniture should not be oversized, but light enough to move around easily. You also want to add enough toys and play options that infants can choose what to do next.

I've always liked Winnie-the-pooh for a kids room. But whatever you choose, you can transfer an image to an object from a coloring book by tracing it on tulle, then onto the object.
