It is not uncommon for people to use terms that are often meant as insults to their particular group among each other . For some it diffuses the power of the word. It is not just black people who do it. As people have pointed out, some women refer to each other as bitches. i have seen gay people cal leach other "fag". i have seen vietnamese call each other "gooks" and so on. Doesn't mean it's right or wrong, but that it is common enough that to single out black people says more about your feelings towards blacks than it does about the issue. Even the way you phrased it. Not all black people use the word and certainly not "all the time".

Not all black people because I certainly don't neither do any of my black friends and I would not have these people as a friend anyway. I think to call each other by this term is ignorant and shows a lack of education, also what annoys me is that if these people heard a white person call a black person by this name they would become angry and call the person a racist, like I said ignorant and uneducated.

I don't know, maybe those who do so are trying to deflate the word. I walked in work one day and said "Hey cracka" to a another white worker. He never spoke to me again. I don't know how effective it is.

Possibly for the same reason that people from Scotland or Australia call each other cunts. In case you didn't know, you can call someone a cunt as an insult, or in jest. ie. "He's a good cunt" "He's a sound cunt" "He's a rich cunt" "He's a fucking lazy cunt". Also remember what happened with the word "gay". It used to mean happy, now it means homosexual. We are no longer in 1960 or even 1609. Not being of African origin I would not bother to risk putting up forty varieties of usage for the word "nigga". But I wouldn't be surprised if those "fly assed cats" had as flexible a usage for the unspeakable word as we do for the word "cunt" here in Scotland. However, as a respectable Scottish cunt, I would be damn suprised if some bitch ass called me a nigga, especially if he were from Jamaica.

Not all black people do that. I'm African-American girl, and i hate it. Even though people say they're taking a negative word and making it positive, it's still just as bad as when it was first used. the whole concept should be squashed. It's an insult. I've had another one of my black friends call me that and i was just as offended as i would be if someone of another race had said it. Personally, i think the whole idea is dumb, and the the people who use it, look dumb saying it. Nigga' is too close to Nigger, and i don't like the word Negro for the same reason. If i ever said that about/or to someone, it wouldn't be out of endearment...
