  • Neither Eric Clapton nor Duane Allman wrote the Layla riff. The riff originally appeared on an Albert King song entitled "As The Years Go Passing By", during the line 'there is nothing I can do'. All Clapton did was took the riff and sped it up.
  • According to Bobby Whitlock of Derek and Dominos, Allman was responsible for bringing the riff to the song. As the first poster said, it was a spin off of an old blues riff, but Allman was responsible for bringing it to Layla.
    • Nosmo King
Then why doesn't it mention Allman's name on the label?
  • It couldn't have been Allman because, as you may have noticed from the label of your own copy, it doesn't mention Allman in the writing credits. The writing credits are Clapton and Gordon. Maybe this will refresh your memory: http://www.45cat.com/record/2058130
