If I really think about it, most of what I own is a luxury. My parents lived through the Depression, they know what it's like to have very little food, wear hand-me-down clothes, no money for entertainment and walking instead of having a car to drive or money for public transportation. And Christmas usually meant receving one small gift, most times it was clothing.

Anything you don't "need" to survive. You need a roof over your head..you need food..you need a minimum amount of serviceable clothing. You need a job and transportation to and from..but it needn't be expensive or flashy or "hot". A lot of things we want become things we think we "need" and that's why people get into debt, in over their heads, and get in big financial trouble. Designer clothes, state-of-the-art electronic gizmos/gadgets, vacations, fancy cars, fancy homes, dining out at expensive restaurants...strip people of all of that wanton excess and they would surely survive. I think the more they have, the longer the list of their "needs"! :)
