Ooooh toughie... I think short stories! Although it depends on the novel... Usually I'd go for the short stories tho! :)

Novels

Novels every time - to me a short story is like a snack when you are desperate for a full meal! I love some short stories though eg Saki - " Mrs Packletide's Tiger" is a good one. And I love the Jeeves and Wooster stories - very funny to read (not to good to watch!)
-
Novels for me. I love a good long story.
-
Novels. But I do like books in series also.

I like novels because it takes a while to develop a relationship with the characters and develop a plot. Short stories are over before you really get to care about the characters. I agree with Sweet T that series are fun, also. I enjoyed Tolkein and also the Harry Potter series, for example. Oh, and Anne Perry's mystery series. And the Outlander series. I better stop now. This could go on for a while. Louis L'Amour. James Michener. Clavell. OK. OK I'll quit here. OK. Just one more: The Bible!

Novels, definitely. But really prefer non-fiction. So much to learn . . . so little time.
-
Both. :D

Collections of short stories of good authors.

I like getting completely involved in a long story. If it spans over many books, so much the better.
-
I much rather novels. Easier to 'get lost' in them! ;-)
