  • Bret Hart, poet, said in 1860 that it was short for magnificat. The likelihood is that this was a joke (because people were already being described as 'nifty' and the meaning did not really refer to a Christian liturgy), but one which would have made sense to the readers, i.e. I suspect most people at the time knew what the real root word was and that therefore 'magnificat' was a pun. Its probably short for magnificent, a word with almost identical meaning to 'nifty' at that time, but there is no proof.
