Honestly, find out what cartoon/sport fad he is in and find him something along those lines. One memoriable gift to give is lessons for something he would like, for example: karate lessons, guitar, piano, ice skating(for hockey). Those kinds of presents aren't ones that will collect dust in the toy box :)

when my nephew was that age, we got him a gift card and he was so excited to use it cause he thought it was a credit card and "big people use credit cards".. so for one day he felt grown up cause he could use a credit card so something like that. Take him to someplace like chuck e cheese's and let him play..buy him some chips for the games. GL
