  • From all I have ever read, it is a very tough and competitive profession. Assuming a person is very skilled, they still need a good agent to help them get good bookings. Even still, there are thousands of fine musicians I am sure in the USA who can't eek out a living, if they had to depend on the income from playing music alone.
  • You have to tour a lot and return to the same cities at least twice a year for people to remember you. With underground music scenes it's a bit easier because of the tight knitting of subcultures and self promotion, in larger commercial markets, it's a matter of having the right people from labels to enjoy your music enough to give you a chance. Anywhere you play, you should always sell shirts and give stickers for exposure and create a buzz.
