She received it in 1903 "in recognition of the extraordinary services they have rendered by their joint researches on the radiation phenomena discovered by Professor Henri Becquerel". She was the first woman to be awarded a Nobel Prize.

Marie Curie discovered the mysterious element radium. It opened the door to deep changes in the way scientists think about matter and energy. She also led the way to a new era for medical knowledge and the treatment of diseases. I don't know what exactly she won the Nobel for, but I would assume it was for her discovery of radioactivity.

Marie Curie is one of the very few persons to have received TWO Nobel awards. The first in physics, together with her husband in 1903 for her research on radioactivity. The second 1911 in Chemistry, for the discovery of the elements Radium and Polonium (the latter named by her in honor of her country of birth, Poland).
