  • Well my favorite place to hike with kids is Chaney Trail, which is above Altadena. There are several beautiful and low-difficulty paths next to a stream running through the canyon, it's a very short drive north of Altadena: http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Altadena,+CA&ie=UTF8&z=17&ll=34.205432,-118.148249&spn=0.00575,0.014849&om=1 Also, Elysian Park and Griffith Park have quite a few family attractions, including miles of trails. They're both near Dodger Stadium, north of downtown off the 5 freeway.
  • I hike with the Sierra Club a lot -- they even have a family / little hikers section, which you could check out. Fryman Canyon is easy for families, it's just off Laurel Canyon, north of Ventura Blvd. And here are some tips of mine on how to lead a hike: http://wehow.ehow.com/how_2015997_lead-a-hike.html
  • Try Tree People at Coldwater and Mulholland. http://treepeople.com/. They have wide fire-road hiking trails in Fryman Canyon that are pretty level, with narrow trails that are a bit more adventurous (great for kids) forking off from them. They also conduct hikes, often with educational themes.
