  • In 1856 (?) Charles Sumner was attacked by a cousin of Sen Andrew Butler, who was verbally vilified by Sen Sumner. It was about the admission of Kansas to the Union, if it should be a "free" state or a "slave" state. The cousin, Rep Preston Brooks of South Carolina, didn't think much of Sumner's speech and went to the SEnate chambers and beat the tar out of Sumner with his cane. Brooks promptly resigned, was reelected, and died at the ripe young age of 37. Sumner did recover, and spent the next 18 yrs in the Senate.
