  • The only way you will look like an idiot is if you try to act like you read the book in the first place. Life happens, people understand. You can still participate, after you learn about the plot from others while they are talking about it.
  • Either don't go or skim like crazy to have some idea of what is going on. There are also a good number of books that have wonderful online reviews you could read.
  • I think it would be best to admit you haven't read the book. If you can't do that, then just sit quietly and enjoy listening to everyone else. If you'd like to participate, I think asking people a question after they've stated an opinion would be a safe bet - say, if they say they really loved such and such a part, ask them why. Also, you can arm yourself with general questions, like, how people would like to change the ending, who was the best character, or what their favorite part was.
  • Either listening and saying nothing or admitting that the book is not read. I would choose the latter.
